Two years ago, the Understanding EU project began with a simple but important question:
How can we make the European Union easier to understand?
Rather than assuming we already knew the answer, we asked the people who matter most: citizens.
More than 600 people took part in our survey, and citizens from five European countries shared their perspectives during dialogue events. They told us where they struggle to understand the EU, what information they are looking for, and how European communication could become clearer and more accessible.
We listened.
Their ideas became the foundation of everything that followed:
- recommendations for policymakers,
- practical guidance on communicating EU topics,
- 28 easy-to-understand Knowledge Bits,
- five explanatory videos,
- and an interactive Digital Lexicon that brings European legislation and institutions closer to everyday life.
Along the way, we learned an important lesson: making Europe more understandable is not simply about using simpler words. It is about listening, creating dialogue and developing learning resources together with citizens.
As the project comes to an end, we hope that these resources will continue to support learners, educators and citizens across Europe—and encourage more people to engage with the European Union, not because they have to, but because they feel informed, confident and included.
