On 8 September 2025, BUPNET organised a roundtable focused on flood-retention measures in the area surrounding Breitenauer See. Local residents took part and shared their perspectives, concerns and ideas for improving community resilience to heavy rainfall and flooding.
During the discussion, participants highlighted the importance of the flood-retention basin and expressed appreciation for the protection it offers to nearby settlements. At the same time, they noted challenges linked to the lake’s increasing recreational use — especially on busy summer days. Issues such as parking pressure, noise and litter were raised as areas where clearer communication and better visitor management could make a real difference.
Participants suggested several practical improvements, including more transparent information during inspections, stronger coordination between authorities and local associations, and targeted awareness-raising for visitors. They also emphasised the value of sharing local experiences so that other communities facing similar flood-risk challenges can benefit from lessons learned.
This exchange once again showed how important local knowledge is when planning and improving environmental measures.
