Making GreenComp easier to understand

Making sustainability competences accessible

How can we help people develop sustainability competences if the concepts behind them are difficult to understand?

This is one of the questions at the heart of GATE. The European GreenComp framework defines 12 competences that can help people think, act and engage for a more sustainable future. But concepts such as systems thinking, problem framing or futures literacy are not always immediately accessible – particularly for educators encountering GreenComp for the first time.

In GATE, we are therefore working on a simplified and illustrated version of the GreenComp framework for adult education.

For each of the 12 competences, the partnership is developing accessible definitions, identifying key concepts and translating abstract ideas into concrete examples. Knowledge, skills and attitudes are linked to situations that people can recognise from everyday life and society.

The aim is not to simplify GreenComp by taking away its complexity. It is to make that complexity easier to navigate – and ultimately help adult educators turn the framework into meaningful learning experiences.

Step by step, GreenComp is moving from framework to practice.
