From competences to serious games

Can you learn systems thinking by playing a game?

Understanding a definition is one thing. Experiencing what a competence means is another.

This is the challenge we are tackling in the next stage of GATE: transforming the 12 GreenComp competences into serious games and interactive learning scenarios.

Rather than simply telling learners what systems thinking, adaptability or collective action mean, the games will place them in situations where they need to use these competences.

What happens when a seemingly sensible decision has unexpected consequences? What if new information changes the situation? What if different people see the same problem differently? And what happens when there is no perfect answer?

Through choices, consequences and reflection, learners can explore sustainability challenges in a safe environment – and discover that complex problems rarely follow a straight line.

Developing these scenarios requires us to think differently about GreenComp ourselves: not just “What does this competence mean?”, but:

“What would it feel like to use it?”

That is where GreenComp starts becoming an experience.
