Learning Beyond the Classroom – Cultural and Career Experiences with UNITE

Over the past weeks, our UNITE participants in Germany have taken part in a variety of activities that combine language learning, cultural discovery, and career orientation. These experiences help participants strengthen their skills while getting to know their new environment and the opportunities it offers.

One highlight was a visit to Saline Luisenhall in Göttingen — Europe’s last traditional pan saltworks. This unique family-run business provided fascinating insights into regional entrepreneurship, craftsmanship, and the importance of preserving local heritage. A beautiful coincidence made the visit even more special: the family flag of the owners is blue and yellow — just like the Ukrainian flag. 🇺🇦

Another important step was accompanying our participants to Karrierekompass 2026, organised by the SüdniedersachsenStiftung. The job fair offered valuable opportunities to connect with local employers, explore different career paths, and gain a better understanding of how the German labour market works.

Culture and language learning also came together during an interactive event about German fairy tales at Lumière Göttingen. Inspired by this experience, our weekly UNITE language café focused on the stories of the Brothers Grimm. Through storytelling, discussion, and reflection, participants practised their German while discovering an important part of Germany’s cultural identity.

These activities show how learning can extend far beyond the classroom. By combining language development, cultural exploration, and real-life encounters with employers and institutions, UNITE aims to support participants in building confidence and finding their place in their new community.

We are impressed by the participants’ motivation, openness, and continuous progress — both professionally and linguistically — and look forward to continuing this journey together.
