TRAIL – Transition to Accessible and Inclusive Learning

TRAIL aims to make adult learning more accessible and inclusive for disadvantaged learners. Although Erasmus+ mobility opportunities have been extended to include adult learners, people with disabilities or fewer opportunities are still significantly underrepresented. TRAIL addresses this issue by developing data-driven strategies, practical tools and capacity-building activities to make KA1 mobility actions more inclusive and impactful.

TRAIL brings together six experienced partner organisations from across Europe to build a community of practice for inclusive mobility. This community combines innovative training formats, research, digital tools, and pilot activities with diverse target groups. TRAIL is the first project of its kind to establish a comprehensive infrastructure for inclusive KA1 learning mobility in adult education.

Project activities:

TRAIL’s primary objective is to empower adult education organisations to provide and administer inclusive learning opportunities for individuals facing physical, mental, or social challenges. By doing so, the project supports the European Commission’s aim to increase participation in and accessibility of lifelong learning.

To this end, TRAIL will:

  • deliver and pilot a continuing professional development (CPD) programme for staff in sending and hosting organisations, combining Design-Based Collaborative Learning (DBCL) and Competence-Oriented Learning and Validation (COL&V) methods;
  • collect pan-European data on the barriers and needs of disadvantaged learners and organisations;
  • set up a matching platform that connects mobility stakeholders, shares good practice and hosts a digital exhibition of inclusive mobility journeys and tools;
  • establish a Europe-wide system for quality assurance, competence validation and cooperation in the field of inclusive adult learning mobility.

Key results and outputs

  • A European-wide stocktaking and analysis of needs and good practice for inclusive mobility
  • A competence framework and CPD programme for adult educators and mobility facilitators
  • Pilot mobility projects with disadvantaged learners in five countries
  • A TRAIL platform offering digital matching, experience showcases and open resources
  • A set of quality assurance mechanisms and inclusion strategies
  • A European TRAIL network for ongoing cooperation and exchange

The project partnership is led by blinc eG, Göttingen, Germany and consists of partners with complementary experience and skills in the field of inclusive mobility, competence oriented learning, mentoring, and validation from Germany, Italy, France, Lithuania, and Portugal.
